Be Supportive

Be Supportive
November 01, 2017

November is officially here (say what?) and, while we’re still trying to figure out where in the world summer (and fall, for that matter) went, we wanted to focus our efforts this month on the idea of being supportive.

As wedding planners, creativity plays such a huge part in what we do—and creativity thrives on community, on brainstorming, on talking things through with others, on the collective whole. But, on the flip side of community, it’s no secret that competition can also be fairy rampant in our industry—as small business owners, our number one goal is to ensure the health and vitality of our own business (because it has to be). So, how can these two ideas—creative community and healthy competition—live in harmony? Well, we love today’s quote, because we happen to think it answers that question.

Today’s words remind us that we don’t have to choose one or the other—that supporting another’s success doesn’t at all take away from our own. It’s a simple idea, really, but it’s one that’s so easy to forget in a world (and an industry) where we’re constantly under pressure to be our absolute best—we are, after all, responsible for planning and executing what is supposed to be the best day in our clients’ lives. And that’s no small order.

The pressure to deliver the best events we possibly can, coupled with the high general demands of our field (working weekends, taking client calls at night, talking brides down from the ledge, making sure vendors have been paid...the list goes on) can often encourage us to settle into a mindset of every planner for herself! But, we happen to think that taking the time to support another’s success—whether that’s offering to mentor a brand-new planner, or picking up the phone and congratulating another planner in your market when they’ve received that award you were hoping to win—is so important when it comes to creating a thriving creative community. Because, if a rising tide lifts all boats, then a thriving wedding-planning industry lifts all planners.

Cheers, Aisle Planners, to a November full of support and community!
